Muse: Backyard Bird Feeder

Hawk Composing Itself After Eating Bird

Always nice to see a hawk in the backyard … until you realize he’s just finished eating one of the other birds you’ve been feeding all winter long. Ecosystem Management. Pretty. Brutal.

Muse: Toronto Maple Leafs Celebrate Father’s Day Early

Got to give the Toronto Maple Leafs major style points for bringing the players’ fathers with them on their Florida road trip this week. Hard to tell who was happier when the Leafs scored – father or son. Original 6 charm. Very classy.

Muse: Tough Love for Canadian Snowboarders

Got to love the Canadian snowboarders. Despite Mark McMorris fracturing his rib and Maelle Ricker fracturing her forearm, they both still plan to compete at the Olympics. Now that’s some true north grit!

Muse: Legal Copy Gone Wild

Received a 1 sentence email from a friend today suggesting we grab lunch … followed by 15 lines of email legal copy from Rogers. Really? I can tell you what should be ‘strictly prohibited’ … how about the tail wagging the dog …

Muse: Electricity. The Perfect Gift After An Ice Storm.

Ice Storm Aftermath

Never guessed the best gift I’d get this year for Christmas would be electricity from Toronto Hydro. It’s so easy to take hydro for granted … until you get hit with back-to-back ice storms and have to go 3 days without power. Then you quickly realize if the 40F cold inside your house doesn’t kill you, the boredom certainly will. My hat’s off to the folks at Toronto Hydro for working night and day this entire Christmas week to restore power to 250,000 Torontonians. The only thing worse than living through an ice storm without power has to be working in the cold every day to restore it.

Muse: Canada Post killed the Mailman

Milk Delivery Box by Side Door

Canada Post announced this week that it will eliminate door-to-door mail delivery over the next 5 years. Understandable … though still hard to imagine the passing of the mailman … Then again, every time I walk past the bricked-over, milk-delivery box at my side door, I still can’t imagine a time when milkmen delivered milk door-to-door … I think I’ll just leave my mailbox up as another sign of the changing times. Change is indeed the only constant.

Muse: Playing Hockey at Maple Leaf Gardens

Newly Renovated Maple Leaf Gardens

Love playing hockey in Toronto’s True North house league. Last week, they sent us to Maple Leaf Gardens to play and this week, to the Ricoh Coliseum, where the Toronto Marlies play. Almost makes you feel like a pro … less the crushing post-game analysis to remind you otherwise.

Muse: Revisiting Allegany State Park Childhood Memories Through YouTube

It’s amazing what you can find on YouTube these days. Like a girl and her sister ‘documenting’ their family vacation in Allegany State Park, New York. The exact same trip we used to make every Thanksgiving when I was their age. We stayed in the same old cabins, slept in the same old beds, heard the same mice scurrying about at night and were just as excited to explore the surrounding creeks and woods all day long. If we had a video recorder back then, I’m sure me and my brother would have made the same kind of video. Too cool.

Muse: High-Energy Halloween Decorating

Always interesting to see Halloween decorating taken to extremes, like this house in Virginia that synchronized 8,500 LED lights with different music you can tune in to on your car radio. Epic. Curious to see what they do for Christmas … if they have any energy left.

Muse: Thanksgiving Spirit

Can’t decide which image is more disturbing: the cute little rabbit I walked past this afternoon that had just been run over or the cute little cat eating it on my return. The harsh reality of Thanksgiving in the city, I suppose. Good for some … not so good for others …

Muse: From Old-School Fish Tank to New-School Koi Pond

Koi in Backyard Pond

Shut down the old fish tank this week, which was probably a good idea, since it was 20 years old and starting to leak at the seams. Hard to imagine that’s the second tank I’ve retired. Guess that just means it’s time to focus on bigger and better things – like the Koi pond in the backyard and sharing it with all the thirsty critters in the neighbourhood. Fully interactive and social. Feels just about right for today.
